Fund-raiser a success for fire departments

Several hundred people enjoyed a Sunday afternoon of fun and games at Marion County Lake during the third annual fund-raiser for Marion County fire departments.

More than $6,000 was raised, about a $1,000 more than last year. Food was planned for approximately 400 people and all was sold.

Representatives from fire departments in the county volunteered their time to the event. Children's games, prize drawings, a fishing contest, and water games gave children of all ages a chance to participate.

County commissioners Dan Holub and Randy Dallke were willing participants on the dunking booth.

A pumper truck, provided by Marion Fire Department, provided water activities by spraying water onto swimmers in the beach area.

Beginning at 5 p.m., several hundred people were served pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, bratwursts, beans, and chips.

Drawings for various prizes were held after the meal.

McKenzie Ehlers won a Henry Golden Boy .22 s/l/lr rifle, Jaci Bridgewater won a La-Z Boy recliner, and Tyler Arocha was chosen to ride on a fire truck to start the first round of fireworks.

At dusk, boats competed in a boat regatta. At dark, several thousand people gathered at the lake for a fireworks display.

The funds will be used to purchase land and develop a training facility for county firefighters.

Peabody Fire Department was the "host" department for this year's event. Fire chief Steven Rose said the fire chiefs within the county will choose a host department for next year's event.
