Garrard competes at NAIA nationals

Former Centre High School student-athlete and current Ottawa University long-distance runner Justin Garrard competed May 24 in the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at Southern Illinois University.

Garrard, who finished 20th out of 61 runners in the marathon (26.2 miles) competition, shattered OU's previous school record set in 1967 by Richard Jackson.

Garrard's time of two hours, forty minutes and 36 seconds bested Jackson's time of 3:06.30.

It was Garrard's first appearance in the championships and he now holds six OU track and field records.

He is the son of John and Sandra Garrard of Lincolnville.
