Garrard places first at two cross country meets

Justin Garrard, Centre High School senior, is well on his way to an outstanding year as a distance runner.

Garrard placed first in the first two cross country meets of the 2004 season.

On Sept. 2, at a meet at Melvern Lake hosted by Lebo/Hartford, his first-place time was 18 minutes, nine seconds.

Kelsey Hatfield placed fourth among the girls with a time of 15:32.

Other medal winners were Brittany Owens, 14th, at 17:30 and Allie Will, 18th, at 17:58. Justine Jennings was 23rd, at 19:53, and Brooke Carlson was 24th, at 20:22.

The girls' team took third overall.

"It was a pretty tough course with some pretty good hills," said coach Alan Stahlecker.

Thursday's meet at Hesston was one of the biggest Centre will participate in, according to the coach. The 49 schools represented sent about 600 runners from all conference levels.

Boys ran by grade level and were divided into two groups, 1-3A and 4-6A.

Garrard won the senior division in 1-3A with a time of 16:37.

Among freshmen and sophomore girls, K. Hatfield was 32nd in the 1-3A division with a time of 14:57. Owens was 55th, at 16:56, Jennings 67th, at 17:53, and Carlson 69th, at 18:03.

Dani Hatfield ran in the junior/senior girls' division and placed 36th at 15:01.
