Gerald Wiens to present program at MCCD meeting

Gerald Wiens of Marion will present a photo program at the annual meeting of Marion County Conservation District Feb. 23 at the Parkview M.B. Church activity center in Hillsboro.

Photos will range from scenic to wildflowers, and from wild animals to weather highlights.

Wiens' love for the outdoors began as a child on his grandfather's farm and led to a master's degree in wildlife biology. His education led him to a position as director of a nature center owned and operated by a chapter of the National Audubon Society.

Due to the requirements for public presentations and educational programs, his passion for nature photography developed.

Although his images are predominantly of the Great Plains, Wiens has photographed in many locations in the United States including Alaska.

His wife, Jan, assists with matting and mounting his photos and with sales at art shows.

Wiens co-authored the book, "Kansas Wildlife." His photos have been published in books, magazines, newspapers, and calendars and have won numerous awards.

His photos are displayed at Dyck Arboretum, Hesston; Chaplin Nature Center, Arkansas City; Dillon Nature Center, Hutchinson; Winfield Art Gallery and Southwestern College, Winfield; The Game Shop, Jefferson City, Mo., and in a Traveling Wildlife Photography Exhibit by the National Wildlife Federation.

In addition to photography, Wiens engages in remodeling and home repair. The couple has two married children and five grandchildren.
