Get in on the action

Where does the time go? It seems like just yesterday we were congratulating graduates and now we're getting ready for back-to-school. Well, not quite. I guess we have the rest of baseball season to get through first.

Many Marion teams are competing this week and next in district and state tournaments. We won't try to name all the teams that are playing, we'd be sure to leave someone out. But, if you are on one of those teams, congratulations and good luck!

Speaking of baseball, if you don't know about the Midwest Plains Regional Tournament scheduled for Marion next week, then you've been spending the summer in a cave.

Events like this do not happen overnight. Volunteers have spent countless hours planning, organizing, and coordinating schedules for teams from seven states to compete in this tournament.

Workers at the baseball complex have spent the spring and summer on projects, including a new pressbox and restrooms as well as field improvements.

Many of the volunteers are parents and coaches. Others are just the usual suspects who show up when something needs done.

The work won't stop when the tournament begins. Organizers will be looking for gatekeepers, concession workers, and all the jobs that will help the tournament run smoothly.

If you like baseball, the Marion baseball/softball complex will be the place to be later next week.

And, if you love baseball, love kids, and want to be involved in all the excitement of the tournament, think about becoming a host family for players coming from other states.

Tournament coordinators have been recruiting host families for several months. More are needed. If you'd like to be a host family, contact Margo Yates, 382-3425, to sign up.

And by the way, when Margo calls on you to volunteer some time during the tournament, do it!

What better way to be in the middle of the action?
