Give blood

To the Editor:

Are you one of the 95 percent of people who could donate blood, but doesn't?

As we approach the holiday season, a time when the blood supply often is dangerously low, I ask you to reconsider. The actual blood donation only lasts about seven minutes. This short amount of time you invest can give someone else an entire lifetime to live — what better gift could you give this season?

Relying on five percent of the population to supply blood for the one out of every three people who will need blood is not reasonable. This is why we hear more and more about blood shortages.

If we all do our part, we can make sure blood is there when we need it, or it is needed for our loved ones. Start a new tradition this year. Make this a season to celebrate giving life by donating blood.

Our American Red Cross blood drive will be 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at Marion High School gym. Call 1-800-GIVELIFE for your appointment.

Donating blood is safe and easy. Most medications do not prevent you from donating. Those with diabetes or high blood pressure may donate as long as their condition is controlled by medication, and they are feeling well that day. Drink plenty of water prior to donating.
