Give it time school project will shine

If it seems like it's been nearly a year since Marion voters passed a bond issue to allow the school district to build an indoor pool, gymnasium, and auditorium, it's because as of two weeks ago, it was.

Three-hundred and sixty-five plus days, and what does Marion have to show for it: no pool, and a bunch of dirt.

It looks like they've been moving at the pace of a running back with three defenders hanging onto his shoulders.

In reality, it's more like one who is running straight for the end zone, but is enduring a few bumps along the way.

It's a good thing construction has begun, and obviously USD 408 board of education has done more in the past year than meets the eye.

The main reason there has been a slight hitch in the process, is the board has refused to budge.

In other words, it is settling for nothing less than the best.

Superintendent Lee Leiker and board members promised a product to voters, and that is exactly what they are delivering.

In order to keep their promises, fighting over details such as the capacity in the auditorium and a top-loading gym was essential.

Sure, the placement of the auditorium changed and then moved back to its original location. Yes, some changes to the landscape of the pool have taken place. But from firsthand experience, it's obvious this board has not misled anyone.

There was some talk of being promised the moon and only offered some cheese. But in the end this project will make surrounding towns envious of the hard work and dedication given to state-of-the-art buildings.

It won't be some magical answer that draws thousands of people to town and erases all negativity, but when all is said and done, Marion will have one more bright spot to talk about.

So, the pressure is on for the district to stay with its word and have three new buildings to make Marion proud.

I'll think they'll pass the test.
