Goering retires from ministry

John Goering preached his last sermon Sunday as pastor of Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion.

The 70-year-old minister was mandated by church policy to retire from full-time work, but he has no plans to quit preaching.

He and his wife, Bev, are moving to Galva. He has accepted a "less than full-time" position at Newton Eastside United Methodist Church.

He said he will be preaching but will have less weekday responsibilities.

"We had 11 wonderful years with the people in Marion," he said. "They welcomed us, and we will miss them."

Goering has been serving as a church pastor for 21 years after 28 years as a school teacher.

The Goerings have four children and four grandchildren, scattered in South Carolina, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas. The couple is looking forward to having time to see their family more often.

New pastor appointed

Beginning July 1, Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion, will have a new pastor.

United Methodist Bishop Scott J. Jones recently announced that Michael Eurit will serve the Marion church.

Pastor Goering will serve until that time.

Closure continues

for former county landfill

Consultant Jack Chappelle presented information Monday to Marion County Commission regarding the installation of gas monitoring wells at the former county landfill.

Bids will be solicited with area companies that have provided services to the county in the past. Drilling will be completed in July, said Chappelle, with samples drawn shortly after.

Chappelle asked the commission to consider sharing the purchase and/or use of a gas meter with McPherson Area Solid Waste. The commission instructed Chappelle to inquire.

— Numerous agencies and organizations were added to the list, requesting support from Marion County in 2007: $6,000 by Communities in Schools of Marion County; $60,000 by Prairie View, Marion; $3,000 by Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Center, McPherson; and $28,790 by Marion County Soil Conservation District.

The commission will consider the requests prior to adopting the budget for the coming year.
