Goessel too much for Centre Cougars

Goessel High School football team proved too tough for Centre from the get-go Friday night.

Kurtis Duerksen returned the opening kick-off 58 yards for a touchdown, leading Goessel to a 65-28 victory.

It wasn't all bad for Centre as they answered Goessel's touchdown right away. Quarterback Seth Jirak raced to the end zone for a 51-yard touchdown two minutes later to cut the lead to 7-6.

Goessel began to pour it on from there behind the running of Justin Fensky.

Fensky carried the ball 20 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Goessel had six touchdown runs in the game and two kick returns for touchdowns.

Centre was led by Bryant Gutsch who had 77 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Jirak added 63 yards, and Tad Remy finished with 35 yards.

Jirak also fared well in the air, as he completed nine passes for 153 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown to Andrew Hajeck.

Hajek caught two balls for 86 yards, and Scott Peterson hauled in four catches for 51 yards.

Jirak did everything he could to help Centre to a victory, adding 23 tackles on defense. Thieen Antoszyk had 10 tackles, Matt Leach had five, and Gutsch and Remy both added four. Adam Bowman registered three tackles, and Hajek chipped in with two.

The Cougars have dropped three in a row since an opening vicotry against St. John's Military.

Centre will host White City Friday for its homecoming game.
