Goessel wants piece of county (road) pie

Following last week's Marion County Commission meeting, Goessel representatives attended Tuesday's meeting to ask for a fair share of road improvements.

John Fast, superintendent of Goessel USD 411, and Richard Drake, a school district board member, asked the commission to consider improvements on several roads near Goessel.

Leroy Wetta, commission chairman, showed Fast and Drake designated funds in the 2005 budget for improvements on three roads near Goessel.

Fast indicated some bus drivers in the school district are having to drive a longer route because of poor road conditions.

"I have drivers adding seven miles on one route," Fast said.

It was determined the improvement of a section of road, three-quarters of a mile long, on 80th between Falcon and Eagle would eliminate the seven-mile detour currently being taken.

Fast referred to 90th between 30th and K-15, more commonly known as the Moundridge Road, as a poor road.

"I don't want to discredit Mr. (Tom) Alstrom (superintendent of Peabody-Burns USD 398) and his efforts in getting better roads in his school district," said Fast. "I want it to be fair and equitable across the county."

Drake said there had been some frustration in Goessel regarding the condition of county roads in that area.

Other roads Fast indicated in a written memo were 120th between 30th and Alamo, 150th between K-15 and Indigo, and "numerous graveled roads no longer have sufficient coverage to adequately allow a bus to travel them in wet conditions," Fast said in the memo.

Wetta added there were efforts made by the county to maintain graveled roads in the area.
