Good things are happening

Marion is poised on the brink of a major breakthrough and good things are happening in our city. At a recent Marion Chamber of Commerce meeting two ideas were presented and received with overwhelming approval.

The first idea, providing an incentive package for anyone who builds a new house in Marion, has moved from idea to reality.

A committee presented the plan to city commissioners Monday and the city agreed to provide up to $20,000 in incentive money. The city will offer home buyers a $1,000 cash grant upon completion of new home construction.

Already, several businesses have agreed to offer additional items for the package. All three banks will waive closing costs, Hannaford Title Company is offering title insurance at reduced rates, and Kannady & Associates is offering chamber bucks. Other local businesses have signed up to provide incentives, as well.

Committee members hope to get the program off the ground soon and will be contacting businesses about support.

Like so many things in life, it's a give-and-take situation. Businesses will provide an item or service for the package. In return, those homeowners live in Marion and patronize local businesses. It's a win-win situation for anyone who participates. This is an ideal opportunity to stimulate growth in Marion.

The other idea that received such overwhelming support from chamber members was a community-wide day-care. This project is being studied by the Early Childhood Task Force and they will meet Tuesday to discuss the plan.

Again, it's a win-win proposal for Marion. It's an attractive incentive for young families looking to move here and will alleviate some of the existing day-care shortage.

Both projects show Marion moving in a progressive, positive direction. These aren't small ideas with little enthusiasm. These things are happening NOW and people will see results — soon. Anyone with suggestions or wanting to help should get involved now.
