Gracia Burnham is speaker at senior program

Gracia Burnham of Rose Hill will present "Lessons from the Jungle" Monday at the 60+ Learning in Retirement Program. A well-known author and former Abu Sayef hostage, Burnham has shared her inspirational story with thousands of people across America.

The session will begin at 10 a.m. in the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center Lobby, located on the campus of Tabor College.

Burnham and her late husband, Martin, spent 17 years as New Tribes missionaries in the Philippines. Her husband flew to various mission stations while she manned the radio. She also filled the roles of hostess and encourager to other missionaries in the field.

On May 27, 2001, the Burnhams were part of a large group taken hostage at gun point at a southern Philippine resort. While Martin did not make it out alive, she was rescued June 7, 2002.

As captives in the Philippine jungle for a year, they faced starvation, exhaustion, gun battles, and murder. Through this experience, the Burnhams found encouragement and hope in a God who at times had seemingly forgotten them. She will share her honest story of her intense soul searching during this time.

Older adults are invited to attend. Enrollment is $15 per person a semester, $28 per couple or $4 a session. In an effort to encourage participation, first-time visitors will be admitted free of charge. Registration and discount lunch cards will be available at the door.
