LETTERS:   Grants for a jail? years ago

To the Editor:

More specific to Jami Williams: Jami you haven't answered my questions about the government grant. Is it an economic growth gift? Who decides the dollar amount and who is to receive it?

Could it be used to help on the jail that certainly needs to be built?

About the jail:

I'm a taxpayer, so the question about how to pay for it is a top priority. I have always been in favor of sale tax, as it is the most equal tax. Everyone pays his share but it certainly is not fair to the big item sales businesses such as automobile dealers.

Could there be an exemption put in place to exclude items with a high sales value? Maybe that would be too complicated. But it needs to be given some thought.

So then we go back to property tax. Too bad the county commissioners didn't put waste management to a county vote and let the taxpayers know about the need for a new jail.

Let's look ahead. We must build a new jail. Build what is needed to make it pay for itself. Cut out all the frills, make it for prisoners, not guests. And if it is a paying proposition, then expand it.
