Griffith selected for Virginia Governor s School

Benjamin Griffith of Chesapeake, Va., has been selected into the Virginia Governor's School for the Arts.

He is the son of Col. Ray and Peri Griffith. Grandparents are Dick and Margie Schwartz and he is the great-grandson of Sadie Bernhardt, all of Marion.

Located on the campus of Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va., the Governor's School gives gifted students academic, visual, and performing arts opportunities beyond those normally available in public schools.

Griffith is one of 15 students selected for the jazz band, which is composed of middle and high school students. He is the only bari-sax musician.

He began playing the bari-saxophone in fourth grade. He was named first chair in the all-city band as a seventh grader, and first chair in the district band as an eighth grader.

He will attend regular school classes in the mornings, and be bused to the Governor's School in the afternoons.
