Herzet donates hair to Locks of Love

Staff reporter

Most people consider their hair to be their "crowning glory. "

Typically, there comes a time when it is necessary to cut hair, particularly if it's long, to allow new, healthy re-growth.

Seven-year-old Morgan Herzet of Marion decided when her long hair was cut, she wanted to donate it to an organization that provides custom-made hairpieces for children.

Ten inches of Morgan's long hair was measured and then banded with a ponytail holder. Hair stylist Rolana Heidebrecht slowly cut through the thick locks.

The hair was slipped into a resealable, plastic bag, and mailed to the Locks of Love organization.

The non-profit organization provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 with hair loss due to medical reasons.

These customized hairpieces are provided free of charge or on a sliding fee scale to children whose families meet the organization's guidelines.

The organization began in 1997, and has helped more than 1,000 children. Most of the donors are children.

Here's how to participate:

The organization accepts a minimum of 10 inches of cut hair from tip to tip.

The clean, dry hair should be bundled in a ponytail or braid and placed in a plastic bag. It should be mailed in a padded envelope.

Hair is needed from men and women, young and old, and all colors and races. Hair may be colored or permed, but not bleached or chemically damaged.

Swept hair from the floor is not usable.

Hair that was cut years ago may be usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.

Hair that is too short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.

Anyone can cut the hair as long as the guidelines are followed.

Monetary donations also are accepted. For more information, contact Locks of Love, 2925 10th Ave. N, Suite 102, Lake Worth FL 33461.
