Hiebert Dulcimers Etc. to perform at 60+ program years ago

Hiebert Dulcimers Etc. will perform Monday at the 60+ Learning in Retirement Program at Tabor College, Hillsboro. Some of the pieces they perform will be from their six recordings.

The session will begin at 10 a.m. in the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center Lobby, located on the campus.

Robert and Eddie Hiebert, a husband and wife musical duo from Abilene, perform a variety of musical selections on varying combinations of dulcimer, guitar, and autoharp sprinkled with warm vocal harmonies.

The group's name originates from the fact that most of their tunes feature the hammered dulcimer, an ancient instrument with many strings that are struck with two small hammers, one in each hand. Another instrument sometimes featured is a smaller fretted instrument with only three or four strings, known as the mountain or lap dulcimer.

The Hieberts have appeared in concert more than 1,400 times for churches, festivals, art galleries, museums, clubs, camps, and other groups, including a performance at an invitation-only dinner at the Eisenhower Center, Abilene, with President George H. and Barbara Bush. In addition to their many appearances in Kansas, they also have performed in 16 other states, as well as in Canada and Japan.

Their repertoire is a blend of folk tunes, work songs, gospel music, ragtime, waltzes, cowboy songs, old-time fiddle tunes, movie themes, and popular songs.

Older adults are invited to attend. Enrollment is $15 per person a semester, $28 per couple or $4 a session. In an effort to encourage participation, first-time visitors will be admitted free of charge. Registration and discount lunch cards will be available at the door.
