History of lake is topic at historical society meeting

A history of Marion County Park and Lake will be the program topic when Marion County Historical Society holds its annual meeting.

The event begins with a 6:30 p.m. dinner June 8 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion.

Guest speaker Helen Beckham will present, "Creating the Marion County Park and Lake. . .A Monument to Prosperity." She will give a brief history of the Civilian Conservation Corps and its contribution to restoring natural resources.

Beckham will tell how Marion was chosen for the lake site, the arrival of black veterans of CCC #4755 to Marion, and other events that took place from the lake's inception in 1934 to its completion in 1940. A slide presentation will portray "a tour around the lake." Former CCC members will be special guests.

All Marion County residents and anyone interested in the topic is invited to attend.

Reservations for the dinner are $10 per plate and must be made by June 3.
