Incident ends calmly after attempted shooting in Ramona

Duane Remmers, 212 D Street, Ramona, was taken into custody without incident at 7:42 p.m. Saturday after 30 law enforcement officers responded to his residence.

According to Marion County Sheriff Lee Becker, Eugene Remmers, the brother of Duane, called Marion County Communications at 3:34 p.m. Saturday from the brothers' residence and reported Duane had discharged a firearm in the residence in a failed attempt to kill himself.

Marion County Deputy Duane McCarty and Hillsboro Assistant Police Chief Jessy Hiebert were the first to respond to the call. Newton Emergency Response Team was requested and responded.

Information was gathered, nearby residences were evacuated, and a perimeter was established, said Becker.

Other officers who assisted with the situation in addition to the sheriff's department and Hillsboro Police Department were from McPherson County, Harvey County, Lindsborg, and Hesston departments.
