Information is compiled on OASIS school at Florence

OASIS school at Florence is in its eighth year. It was established to serve students who have trouble functioning and learning in a regular classroom.

A student can transition through the various levels at OASIS in as little as nine weeks. At that time, they can go back to their local school district.

OASIS has had students for as briefly as one day to as long as five and one-half years.

To demonstrate the wide variety of situations addressed at OASIS, the following facts were compiled by Gina Kimbrel, school psychologist, and Debbie Oelke, school social worker:

— A total of 118 students have been enrolled in OASIS during its eight-year history.

— 12 students have been repeat enrollees through removal from their home, foster care placement change, or moving and returning. One transition student returned to OASIS.

— 43 students have been in foster care in Marion County, some coming from Kansas City and Topeka areas.

— 19 students have transitioned to home schools.

— Seven have graduated from high school while attending OASIS, six more graduated following transition to home school, and two have attended college.

— One will graduate from a junior college this spring with an associate's degree in Fire Science. He has been employed with the El Dorado Fire Department for one year. He came back and spoke to middle and high school students in the fall.

— Nine students were removed from their homes while attending OASIS.

— 17 have moved away.

— Seven have dropped out of school or exited special education.

— One went to Job Corps and joined the military.

— One attended the Marion County Learning Center.

— 22 students were on probation while at OASIS and three have had involvement with the law as adults.
