It's Chingawassa time

It's Chingawassa time again — for the 11th year in a row. And like previous years, organizers have planned a weekend chock-full of events, activities, and first class entertainment.

Without the leadership of the steering committee, support from local businesses, and people willing to spend cash for buttons, Marion would be "just another small town."

As it is, Marion has a name, and is known for Chingawassa Days. People come from near and far to experience the festival events and partake of Marion's hospitality for the weekend.

Sadly, there are local people who won't support Chingawassa Days, or any other event for that matter. They won't spend a few dollars for a button and they'll complain about noise, traffic, and crowds. They also are the ones who complain about a dying town.

For those who plan to attend this weekend's festivities, here are a few reminders to make it a great experience for everyone.

1. Wear sunscreen. Central Park is shaded but that doesn't mean those stately trees will protect you from the sun at all times.

2. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket. Seating is available, but to guarantee a comfortable seat, bring your own.

3. Kansas weather is unpredictable. Bring a jacket, especially for the evening events. And if you attended the event in previous years, you know an umbrella also is a good idea.

4. Leave pets at home. Most animals don't like crowds. They'll be happier at home and you won't have to worry about them.

5. Leave the coolers at home. There are plenty of food and drink choices in the park.

6. Forget the alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is prohibited in the park at all times.

7. Bikes, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades are prohibited in the park. Leave them at the gate, or better yet, leave them home.

8. Handicap-accessible parking is available for those who need it.

9. Along with the suncreen, bring insect repellent. Bugs like Kansas in June.

10. Bring your sense of adventure. Even though the committee does everything in their power to organize a top-notch festival, they can't control the weather. So, be prepared to be flexible if storm clouds loom on the horizon.

Come prepared to have a great time. Remember your buttons. You won't be admitted to the park without a pass.

Organizers, promoters, and contributors have done their part — now it's up to us to show up and have a great time.

After the festival, don't forget to thank the steering committee and contributors for their efforts.
