It's good to be back (again)

After attending my first Marion High School football game since 2005, I can once again say it's nice to be back.

I said it when I started my second stint at the paper in March when the spring sports season started, and now again when the fall season is beginning.

But there is something about a football game that gets the juices pumping.

After missing the first game of the season, I was more than ready for game two at Ellinwood.

The Warriors didn't disappoint with a 64-yard pass play on the first play of the game, en route to a 28-6 victory.

From a reporter's point of a view (and a fan, although that has to come second), the game was great.

Marion played stellar defense, rushed for nearly 300 yards, and was never in trouble of losing the game.

Of course there isn't a football coach in his right mind who is 100 percent pleased with any game that isn't a championship victory.

So needless to say, MHS head coach Grant Thierolf saw some things that needed fixing.

Still, he and his coaching staff were glad it was a victory, and praised their kids for playing hard.

Once again I was impressed with the Warrior fan base turnout, especially for a game 90 miles down the road.

MHS fans prove game in and game out they have the best fans in every sport.

I didn't think about it until Saturday, but that was the first game I have covered where Casey Nelson was not the running back.

The former Warrior star made the games fun to watch, and current running back Austin Hager did the same.

It was neat to see a different style of runner in Hager who was more of a bruiser than Nelson.

Both are great in their own right.

Overall it was good to get out on the gridiron and watch a quality team. It remains to be seen just how good this Warrior team is, but it's starting to look like they may have the same feelings as me: it's good to be back.
