It's party time

It's Chingawassa time again. For the eighth year in a row, organizers have planned a plethora of events and activities for the weekend, as well as some first-class entertainment.

Without the constant leadership of the steering committee, support from local businesses, and people willing to spend the cash for buttons, Marion would be "just another small town."

As it is, Marion has a name, and is known for it's annual Chingawassa event. There aren't many small towns across the United States that can pull off such a successful festival year after year.

People come from all over, not only Kansas and neighboring states, but England and Australia to partake of Marion's hospitality for the annual weekend.

Sadly, there are local people who won't support Chingawassa, or any other event, for that matter. They won't spend a few dollars for a button and they'll grump about the traffic, noise, and crowds. They also are the ones who sit in the coffee shops complaining about a dying town.

For those who do plan to attend this weekend's festivities here are a few reminders to make it a better festival for everyone:

1. Wear sunscreen. Central Park is shaded but that doesn't mean those stately trees will protect you from the sun at all times.

2. Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket. Seating is available in the park, but to guarantee a comfortable seat, bring your own.

3. Kansas weather is unpredictable. Bring a jacket, especially for the evening events. In fact, an umbrella might not be a bad idea.

4. Leave pets at home. Most animals don't like crowds. They'll be happier at home and you won't have to worry about them.

5. Leave the coolers at home. There are plenty of food and drink vendors available in the park to provide a variety of snacks.

6. Forget the alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is prohibited in the park at all times.

7. Bikes, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades are prohibited in the park. Leave them at the gate, or better yet, leave them at home and walk down to the park.

8. Handicap-accessible parking is available for those who need it.

Last but not least, come prepared to have a great time. Remember your buttons. You won't be admitted to the park without one.

The organizers, promoters, and contributors have done their part — now it's up to us to show up and have a good time. And after the festival, don't forget to thank the steering committee and contributors for their efforts.
