It's that time of year

The holiday season is alive and well in Marion! Downtown events Sunday afternoon were the hit of the weekend, especially the first-ever Jingle Bells Parade. Led by St. Nick on a big red fire truck, the parade featured folks of all ages promoting the Christmas season.

Following the parade, children lined up to sit on Santa's lap and share their Christmas wishes. Even pets got into the holiday spirit and dressed for a pet parade and costume contest.

While a little snow might have made the day more holiday-like, the warm temperatures and sunshine were appreciated.

Don't forget to thank Marion Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the festivities and everyone else who participated in Sunday's events.

Make an effort to shop at hometown businesses this holiday season. Most merchants are eager to help customers and some may be able to special order things they don't normally carry.

Granted, there are some things that can't be purchased in Marion. But there are some unusual items that only can be found in Marion. Isn't there someone on your list who deserves a unique gift from one of Marion's unique businesses?

While most of us look forward to the holidays, for some it is a time of uncertainty and hopelessness. Some of us search for the perfect gift for the person who has everything. Yet, there are others who have trouble paying the everyday expenses and don't have money for Christmas trees, gifts, or even holiday meals.

Community Christmas is a wonderful way to help those less fortunate during the holiday season.

Angel trees have been placed at local businesses. Those who wish to help may choose angels from the trees, purchase the listed gifts, and return them, unwrapped, to Marion Chamber of Commerce or Duckwall's.

If you're not a shopper, monetary donations also are needed. Funds are used to purchase food, wrapping paper, and additional gifts.

Marion folks are noted for their generosity. Let's lend a helping hand during this most joyous time of the year.
