It's worth exploring

Marion-Florence USD 408 is considering switching to an all day kindergarten curriculum.

It seems like a logical step in the district's vision of "empowering lifelong learners."

Advocates for both sides of the issue have valid arguments.

On one side of the issue, we have those who think children will benefit from extended learning opportunities of all day kindergarten.

More classroom time will give students more opportunities to learn basic skills before being advanced to the first grade level, thereby replacing the need for a transitional first grade.

District teachers and superintendent Lee Leiker have done their homework on the subject. According to Leiker's research, in 1998 23 percent of all kindergartens were all day programs. That number more than doubled by 1999 — to 55 percent.

They also know, to the minute, how much time is spent on different sections of the kindergarten curriculum. A full day program would help students, allowing time for additional instruction of goals and objectives that aren't getting attention now.

On the other side of the issue, there is the argument that all day kindergarten is asking the district to take on a bigger chunk of parenting responsibilities.

Granted, children need to spend time with parents. However, in today's society, most families rely on a two-paycheck income, necessitating the need for both parents to work outside the home.

So, instead of children spending time at home with Mom, they're at day-care or preschool.

Wouldn't most parents rather see their children get a jump-start on education?

Some parents may not feel their child is ready for a full day of school. They would be given the opportunity to opt-out of the full day program.

Others may welcome the opportunity for added learning.

As teachers point out, kindergartners start school with a wide range of skills. However, all of them would benefit from an all day program.

Board members and administrators will be researching the topic and patrons have the opportunity to weigh in with their thoughts and suggestions.

Marion schools are one of the many positive attractions for this area. New programs that enhance the educational system — like all day kindergarten — are worth exploring.
