Jack Spain

George Raymond "Jack" Spain, 93, died May 13, 2006, at Marion.

Born Dec. 15, 1912, in the Wonsevu community, he was the son of Carmon and Subrina (Hensley) Spain.

He was a lifetime resident of the Flint Hills, and a successful farmer and rancher.

On Dec. 26, 1934, he married Elizabeth (Bessie) Mercer. She died in 1978.

On July 9, 1978, he married Hope Patton Koch. The couple lived on a farm in the Elk community.

After a short-lived retirement and move to Hope's house in Marion, the couple returned to the farm, where they lived until 1998.

They sold the farm and retired to Marion. Ill health forced their move to Marion Assisted Living in February 2005, then to Marion Manor in July 2005.

Hope died April 14, 2006.

He was a member of Homestead Friends Church and attended Eastmoor United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, a 32nd degree Mason, and member of the Midian Shrine. He was a former Chase County commissioner.

Survivors include four stepdaughters, LuJean Krause of Emporia, Loma Frederick of Hutchinson, Glenda Taylor of Marion, and Marylyn Blanding of Wichita; sister, Marjorie Morgan of Strong City; 12 step-grandchildren; 32 step-great-grandchildren; and 14 step-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held this morning (Wednesday) at Eastmoor United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Priest officiating.

Burial was in Homestead Cemetery, rural Cedar Point.

Memorial funds have been established with Homestead Cemetery Improvement Fund or St. Luke Foundation.
