James Helfer

James "Jim" Helfer, 91, died March 6, 2007, at St. Luke Living Center, Marion.

Born March 1, 1916, at Tonawanda, N.Y., he was the son of James A. and Mary Ellen (MacClaren) Helfer.

He served in the Armed Forces from 1939-1946, during World War II.

On Oct. 10, 1944, he married Doris Marcum. They spent most of their married life at Newton, moving to the Marion County Lake in 1985.

He was a retired car salesman and businessman. He was a lifetime member of the Masons, VFW, American Legion, and Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of St. Luke Living Center, Marion; two daughters, Judi and David Burkett of Hesston and Vicki and Kevin Hoffer of Marion; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at Eastmoor United Methodist church, Marion.

Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.

Memorial funds have been established with St. Luke Foundation, Eastmoor United Methodist Church, or the Alzheimer's Association.
