Join a winning team

School begins the end of this week. That usually brings about the typical "school safety" editorial in which drivers are reminded to watch out for children on their way to and from school and remember the bus laws.

In a break from tradition, here are a few thoughts about other aspects of the beginning of the school year. . .

Schools always need volunteers. Getting involved with some sort of school activity is a rewarding way to spend volunteer hours. Each school has some form of parent association that can use enthusiastic and willing workers. Teachers also are looking for classroom volunteers.

Not a volunteer? How about being a supporter? Fall sports will begin soon and each team needs a wide fan base to encourage their efforts. Not only will you be cheering on the home team, you'll be getting some quality entertainment from hometown talent.

Sports teams aren't the only teams who need support. From the elementary level all the way through high school, there are numerous organizations that need the support of school boosters.

Clubs at the high school level, such as Key Club, FFA, FCCLA, debate, forensics, and many others that aren't named here need the support of the community as much as any sports team. Members of these clubs and groups are involved in community service projects and fund-raising activities as well as other school-related events such as going to class and homework.

This community is blessed with a school district full of administrators, teachers, and other staff members who are dedicated to teaching and leading students. The community also is blessed with students who are talented, ambitious, and eager to participate in activities. Become part of the support network that helps these students succeed.
