Junior high Cougars fall to Prairie Heights

Centre Junior High School basketball teams played Thursday at Prairie Heights. The girls' varsity was defeated, 25-21. The boys' varsity lost, 28-20.

Centre girls were down by just one point, 10-9, at halftime, but were outscored 7-3 in the third quarter to fall behind by five. They mustered nine points in the fourth quarter compared to eight by Prairie Heights, but ended the game with a deficit of four points.

Shelby Deines and Josie Peterson scored most of Centre's points with 10 and eight, respectively. Allison Shields added two and Katie Remy one.

The girls' junior varsity game went to overtime, and the Cougars won by one point, 20-19. Scorers were Ripley Howard, seven, DJ Chavers and Shields, four each, Tori Schill and Remy, two each, and Dallas Rosenow, one.

The varsity boys got off to a slow start and were down by six points, 10-4, at the end of the first quarter. They picked up their play in the second quarter to outscore Prairie Heights 8-2 and tie the game at 12 all.

The score remained tied at the end of the third quarter, but the Cougars' shooting turned cold in the fourth. They were outscored 10-2 for an eight-point loss.

A.J. Temel led Centre scoring with eight points. Tyler Klenda and Trevor Troutt added four points each and Brian Burhoop and Jared Diepenbrock two points each.

The boys' junior varsity defeated Prairie Heights, 42-19. Scores by quarter, Centre first, were 16-12, 12-2, 8-0, and 6-8.

Heath Hill led scoring with 10 points. Rustyn Kerbs scored all eight of his points in the first quarter.

Cole Svoboda, Jessie Kopietz, Jacob Jirak, and Tyler Klenda scored four points each. Contributing two points were Casey Kristek, Zach Antoszyk, Benjamin Wirtz, and Tanner Brunner.
