Junior livestock show draws youth

Area youth recently competed for auction premiums and scholarships during the 74th annual Kansas Junior Livestock Show in Wichita. The statewide event featured 673 4-H and FFA members from 86 counties who exhibited 1,256 head of livestock.

Entries included the following Marion County and area participants:

Lamb division: Lauren Geis, Durham, 9th in class seven, Suffolk market lamb, 10th in class three, natural market lamb; Matt Brown, 1st in class 14, crossbred market lamb, 1st in class five, ewe lamb wether dam, 3rd in class 11, ewe lamb wether dam, 6th in class six, natural market lamb; Bryce Roberts, 7th in class eight, Suffolk market lamb; and Sa Rae Roberts, 2nd in class 12, crossbred market lamb, Hillsboro; Jared Barney, 11th in class four, natural market lamb; Nathan Barney, 5th in class two, yearling wether dam.

Heifer/steer division: Ty Goossen, 2nd in class five, Angus breeding heifer; Alex Nuss, 4th in class 11, crossbred market steer; Sa Rae Roberts, 1st in class 12, Shorthorn breeding heifer; Maci Schlehuber, 3rd in class 19, Charolais breeding heifer and champion Charolais breeding heifer, Hillsboro; Taylor Harms, Lincolnville, 1st in class 11, Red Angus breeding heifer; Allie Will, Lost Springs, 3rd in class seven and 6th in class nine, Hereford and P.H. breeding heifer; and Sam Ehrlich of Marion, 4th in class 43, commercial breeding heifer and 7th in class two, Hereford market steer.

Swine division: Cody Parmley, Cedar Point, 7th in class two, Duroc market barrow and 5th in class 14, Yorkshire market barrow; Ethan Frantz, 1st in class 27, crossbred market barrow and reserve champion spotted market barrow; Aaron Klassen, 2nd in class 10, Hampshire market barrow; Brandon Klassen, 3rd in class nine, Hampshire market barrow and 5th in class 12, Yorkshire market barrow, Hillsboro; Kailyn Riffel, Lincolnville, 13th in class 23, crossbred market barrow; Daniel Goentzel, Marion, 16th in class two, crossbred market barrow; Karl Riffel, 10th in class 27, crossbred market barrow and reserve champion Yorkshire market barrow; and Kyle Riffel, 1st in class three, Duroc market barrow and 3rd in class 19, crossbred market barrow, Tampa.

Goat division: Karl Riffel, 3rd in class five meat goat; Kyle Riffel, 5th in class four meat goat.
