Kansas Day celebration set for Jan. 29 years ago

Marion's fifth annual Kansas Day celebration will be at noon Jan. 29 at McGillicuddy's Restaurant in Marion.

The restaurant is no longer open to the public, but will be on this day for those with reservations.

Diane Eickhoff of Kansas City, Mo., will portray Clarina Nichols as this year's Kansas Humanities Council History Alive! portrayal.

Nichols came to the Kansas territory in 1854 determined to keep out both slavery and whiskey, while bringing in rights for women. Speaking out at the Wyandotte Constitutional Convention, she convinced members to include women's rights, a move which was far in advance of most states.

Nichols shares her personal story as a single mother, farmer, editor, lay doctor, co-founder of an integrated school, and Underground Railroad conductor.

Invitations have been sent to Governor Kathleen Sebelius, Kansas senators in Congress, and appropriate members of the Kansas Legislature.

Reservations for this event, which includes the traditional Kansas roast beef dinner, may be made by calling Janet Bryant at 382-3418 or 382-2942.
