Kansas springs to be topic of 60+ Learning in Retirement program years ago
Rex Buchanan of Lawrence will present "The Springs of Kansas" Monday at the 60+ Learning in Retirement Program. Buchanan will give an illustrated lecture on this source of water.
The session will begin at 10 a.m. in the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center Lobby, located on the campus of Tabor College, Hillsboro.
Buchanan, who grew up on the edge of the Smoky Hills near Little River in Rice County, has an undergraduate degree from Kansas Wesleyan University and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He has been associated with the Kansas Geological Survey, based at the University of Kansas, since 1978, and has been associate director for public outreach since 1984.
As an author, editor, and co-author of many books focusing on Kansas geology, Buchanan's most recent book, titled "Geowriting," was published in 1995.
He has been president of the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education, the Kansas Academy of Science and the Association of Earth Science Editors.
Older adults are invited to attend. Enrollment is $15 per person a semester, $28 per couple or $4 a session. In an effort to encourage participation, first-time visitors will be admitted free of charge. Registration and discount lunch cards will be available at the door.
