KDOT informs drivers of U.S.-50 construction years ago

Ten-foot-wide paved shoulders, CB radio alerts, and increased inspections are measures Kansas Department of Transportation is taking to provide warning at U.S.-50 work zone.

Construction work is slated to resume today on U.S.-50, three miles east of Peabody with these additional warnings to motorists planning to be in place.

"Beyond the warning signs, pilot car, and flaggers that are already in place to alert motorists of the maintenance work, we are taking extra measures when the work resumes," said Steve Swartz, KDOT spokesman.

KDOT will divert traffic partially on a 10-foot-wide paved shoulder, where vehicles must pass over built-in rumble strips. An additional measure to alert motorists will be two CB radio alert devices on either end of the project. The devices have a broadcast range of two miles and will send a message to alert truckers and other motorists who use CB radios of maintenance work ahead.

The Kansas Highway Patrol recently announced plans to increase the number of random inspections of tractor-trailers on U.S.-50, near the accident area.

The inspections will be conducted by the patrol's Motor Carrier Safety Program, will check log books, and the condition of the rigs, including brakes and headlights. Extra troopers will patrol the area as well.

Work at the accident site was stopped June 29, following the second accident at the same location in two days.
