Kline home suffers major damage in afternoon fire

Fire caused substantial damage to a Marion residence Monday afternoon.

Marion Fire Department was called at 1:57 p.m. to the Mike and Patsy Kline at 102 E. Santa Fe Street.

According to Marion Fire Chief Mike Regnier, when the fire crew arrived there was smoke coming from the top story of the older home.

The Kansas Fire Marshal's office investigated the fire Tuesday with no official finding released at press time. Regnier did say the fire originated in a room on the ground floor which was burned. The remainder of the damage in the house was caused by smoke.

Thirteen Marion firefighters responded with mutual aid from Hillsboro Fire Department which provided five crew members.

Fire crews left the scene at 6 p.m. Monday.

Regnier was asked if gusty winds contributed to the fire and he said the weather did not affect it. The house's plaster held the heat, causing flare-ups and making it difficult to extinguish.

There was no damage to the Kline family's exterior buildings or neighbor's property.
