Labor Day celebration will feature carnival

The annual Florence Labor Day celebration is being planned for Sept. 3-6.

Lewellen Amusements of Andover will provide a carnival between 5 and 7 p.m. Sept. 3. To kick-off the carnival, free hamburgers will be given to the first 500 people who come and support the carnival.

Sue Klassen, chairman of the event, said it was difficult to find a carnival to come to a smaller community.

"We have searched everywhere to find a carnival that was willing to come to little ol' Florence, Kansas," Klassen said. "We are just too small of a venue for most of them."

Klassen said the carnival they have contracted is first rate, clean, and safety-conscious.

Lewellen Amusements will split their show between Florence and a city in Oklahoma, Klassen said.

Advanced tickets for the carnival are available at Florence Market. A family pack is $17 which is an $8 savings over the regular price. Wristband night will be Sept. 5.

The highlight of the weekend will be the parade, which will begin at 11 a.m. Sept. 6. All kinds of entries are requested with prizes awarded to three floats.

This year's theme is "Together We're Making A Difference."

Kid's ranch rodeo and muttin' bustin', poker run, street dance, citywide garage sales, downtown barbecue, gospel concert, and melodrama are among the activities being planned.

Buttons for the weekend are $3 which will provide admission to most events. Button proceeds provide funding for all of the events.

Some supporters like to pick out a specific button number. Following are the locations and button numbers: Peabody Market, 20-99; Chuck Wagon, 100-199; Town and Country Café, 200-299; Cottonwood Valley Bank, 300-399; Florence Market, 400-499; Reliance Energy, 500-599; Florence City Office, 600-699; Shear Success, 700-749; Williams Service, 750-799; Junction Saloon, 800-899; and Sue Klassen, 900-999.
