Lady Cougars move to 5-1 with win over Wakefield

The CHS girls' basketball team came out strong against Wakefield Friday on the home court and won 60-36. Their record now stands at 5-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.

With good passing, good assists, and strong play inside, they led 14-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Wakefield turned the ball over numerous times in the second quarter, and the Lady Cougars took advantage to build their lead to 15 points, 33-18, by halftime.

The Lady Bombers outscored Centre 10-9 in the third quarter, but an 18-8 run by the Lady Cougars in the fourth provided an easy 24-point win.

Megan Gutsch had an excellent game, scoring 19 points including seven field goals and five-of-eight from the free-throw line. Selena Seifert also scored in double digits with 12 points.

Other scorers included Alisha Barney seven, Kylie Burhoop and Teaira Turner six each, Brittany Owens three, Samantha Alvarez and Shelby Deines two each, and Alyssa Luna one.

The team played St. Xavier Dec. 12, also at home, and won by a wide margin.

The junior varsity defeated Wakefield, 41-33. After a comfortable 12-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, they were outscored 17-11 in the second, but maintained a one-point lead at halftime.

Both teams scored four points in the third quarter, but a 14-7 advantage in the fourth gave the Lady Cougars an eight-point win.

Leann Pankratz was the Lady Cougars' leading scorer with 14 points, followed by Shelby Deines with 11. Carlye Simons contributed five points, Josie Peterson four, Samantha Seifert, Amy Hajek, and Brooke Carlson two each, and Bridgette Burns one.
