Lady Cougars split two at Hope

League tournament is Saturday at Wakefield

Centre High School volleyball team won one and lost one Oct. 5 at Hope. They defeated Wakefield in two games, 25-23 and 25-14, but lost to Hope in two games, 11-25 and 25-27.

In the match with Hope, Jill Fenske led scoring with 10 total points. Other scorers were Brianne Stahlecker five, Selena Seifert five, Alisha Barney three, Jackie Klenda six, Kylie Burhoop four, and Alyssa Luna one.

Four players, Fenske, Klenda, Stahlecker, and Seifert contributed two aces each.

Centre completed 48 of 49 serves. Seventeen rally points were scored.

Klenda led the Lady Cougars in hitting with eight spikes on nine attempts, and four kills. Other hitters were: Alisha Barney, 3-4, four kills; Alyssa Luna, 3-4, one kill; Fenske, 3-5, one kill; Megan Gutsch, 0-4; Kylie Burhoop, 2-4, one kill.

Stahlecker set the ball perfectly 15 times, six leading to a kill. Luna was 4-5 and Seifert was a perfect 5-5, three for a kill.

Centre missed two of 37 serves in the match with Hope. Stahlecker, Klenda, and Luna were credited with one ace each. The team scored 20 rally points.

Fenske was strong at the front line with 18 spikes of 21 attempts and four kills. Klenda added nine spikes and five kills, and Alisha Barney added nine spikes, two kills, and one block.

Others included Megan Gutsch, 5-7, one, and one; and Kylie Burhoop, 2-3, and two.

Stahlecker was 32-32 in setting, eight leading to a kill. Luna was 11-13, two for a kill.

The varsity record at the end of the match was 9-10.

The girls will compete Saturday in the Eisenhower League tournament at Wakefield. Games begin at 9 a.m.

The junior varsity defeated Hope, 25-9 and 25-20. Samantha Alvarez served for eight points in game one. Other scorers were Burhoop four, Barney three, Amy Hajek three, and Seifert one.

The team was 21 of 25 in serving and added six rally points.

Gloria Belton served for four points in game two, followed by Hajek three, Kristine Jirak three, and Teaira Turner two.

They were 23 of 24 from the serving line and added 11 rally points.

The junior Lady Cougars lost to Abilene in three games, 25-23, 17-25, and 10-15.

Belton provided eight total service points, followed by Jessica Deines and Turner, six points each, Alvarez two, Jirak one, and Hajek one.

The team completed 42 of 49 serves and tallied 27 rally points.

The league tournament is Saturday at Wakefield.

JV tournament

The CHS junior varsity volleyball team traveled Saturday to Marion to compete in a JV tournament. They played three matches, winning one and losing two.

In the opening match with Marion, the girls were defeated in two games, 12-15 and 15-25.

Samantha Alvarez was leading server with five points. Gloria Belton scored two service points, and Teaira Turner and Amy Hajek added one each. The team tallied 18 rally points and completed 22 of 28 serves.

In the second match, the team was defeated by Nickerson in two games, 20-25 and 10-25.

Jessica Deines was credited with five service points, followed by Hajek, four, and Turner, three. Alisha Barney, Alvarez, and Kristine Jirak served for one point each. The team completed 29 of 32 serves and tallied 14 rally points.

The third match was a charm as the girls defeated Herington in two games, 25-15 and 25-9.

Deines scored 16 total service points, followed by Turner with nine, and Hajek with seven. Other scorers were Alvarez, two, and Belton and Barney, one each. The team lost only three of 49 serves and tallied 16 rally points.
