Lady Warriors keep league record at .500 years ago

With a 2-0 victory against Sterling Sept. 25, Marion High School volleyball team improved to 2-2 in the Mid-Central Activities Association. A loss to Smoky Valley later in the night gave MHS a 3-16 overall record.

"We played very well. We were aggressive at the net," head coach Jim Versch said.

Sophomores Kayley Heerey and Julia Zeiner provided the aggressive attack, after having good sets from fellow classmate Lindsay Hett. MHS defeated the Black Bears with scores of 25-17 and 25-14.

"The squad really exhibited great teamwork and became very scrappy, picking up most hits or freeballs," Versch said.

The Warriors came out fired up again in the second match against Smoky Valley, taking the first game, 25-13. After losing to the Vikings (4-0, 9-7) earlier in the season 27-25, 27-25, they were one game away from exacting some revenge.

Instead, Versch said the aggressiveness that was there in the beginning was gone, and the Warriors lost the final two games, 25-19, 25-17.

"We need to learn how to 'finish' a match," he said.

Still, the Warriors are sixth out of 12 teams in the MCAA as they reach the final quarter of the season. They will be in action Tuesday at the Halstead quad to face Hillsboro and Wichita Collegiate.

Junior varsity

MHS junior varsity team has played well recently, defeating Centre and Herington Sept. 20 at the Centre invitational.

The Warriors downed the home Cougars by scores of 25-13, 10-25, 25-17, and crushed the Railers, 25-9, 25-9.

The team lost both matches Sept. 25 when it played at Sterling.

The Warriors fell to Smoky Valley and Sterling, both in two games.

The Warriors will play host Saturday to a junior varsity invitational at MHS gymnasium. Haven, Hillsboro, Remington, Abilene, Wichita Sunrise Academy, Nickerson, and Herington will join Marion in the eight-team tournament.

The Warriors will play 9 and 11 a.m., and 2 p.m., before championship play begins.
