Lake improvements may include new shop

A new shop building at Marion County Park & Lake may be in the works.

Lake director Dale Snelling told the Marion County Commission Monday asbestos siding needed to be replaced on the existing shop building.

Sufficient funds are not available, Snelling said, for the construction of a new building. When asked the size needed, Snelling responded a 40-foot-by-40-foot would be ideal.

There are two tractors and two trucks that could be stored in the building.

Commissioner Dan Holub said he would like to review other options for the shop other than replacing the siding.

The building is not part of the park's historical designation.

Commissioner Randy Dallke asked Snelling if vehicles near the shop were operable, Snelling said no. Dallke suggested those vehicles and items of no use to the county be sold.

In other lake business:

— Snelling also requested and received permission to advertise for and hire an additional part-time employee for painting and other maintenance needs. The park currently has two part-time employees who primarily mow the grounds.

— Concerns were heard regarding the need for additional patrol during the spring and summer months. Holub asked if the sheriff's department could assist.

— Snelling will obtain bids regarding new signs at the boat ramps and heated dock.

— Brochures will be updated with the current rules and regulations, Snelling said. Kansas Wildlife and Parks will reimburse the county the additional expense.

— A dam inspection was approved for $2,000 and will be completed before the April deadline.

— County crews may assist with road work on the dam located at the lake. Snelling said drainage holes on the road were plugged. Removal of dirt and road material will be required to unplug the holes.

— Refunds will be issued to those who paid annual fees for lake facilities. The refunds will be pro-rated.

— Tree removal will be needed because of the January ice storm. The commission recommended Snelling follow the guidelines set by FEMA to receive reimbursement for the expenses.
