Laurin, Waner complete Army officers' training

Two Marion County residents recently graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.

John L. Laurin and Steven J. Waner were commissioned as second lieutenants in U.S. Army National Guard.

During training, the soldiers received "basic soldiering instruction." Officer candidates are tested and evaluated in leadership skills and team work abilities required of a commissioned officer. Students utilized acquired skills to function in "leader and follower" positions in squad and platoon-sized elements in a stressful and demanding field environment involving various tactical situations.

Laurin is the husband of Jessica Laurin of Marion. He graduated in 1986 from Palco High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1992 from Kansas State University. He is the son of Jerome and Irma Laurin of Long Island and the son-in-law of Joseph and Barbara Tajchman of Marion.

Waner is a 2002 graduate of Marion High School and the son of Bernie and Janice Waner of Peabody.
