Leadership Marion County class spends a day in Topeka

How does the state board of education impact local schools? What does the KBI do to benefit local law enforcement agencies? What are the "hot-button" topics in the Kansas legislature? These questions and other issues were addressed Thursday during the annual tour of Topeka by the 2006 Leadership Marion County Class.

Representative Don Dahl took the class on the floor of the House of Representatives. Dahl showed the class how the House operates. Dahl also shared with the class how he got involved in politics. Dahl, a Tabor College graduate, is a retired U.S. Navy pilot and officer.

Senator Jim Barnett met with the class and discussed his views on the state's budget, gambling, education, and health care. The Emporia physician is seeking the Republican nomination for governor.

David Aubrey, director of communications for the department of education informed the class about funding for education, how the state board of education operates, and current issues in state education.

Former Hillsboro resident Dale Jost, finance bureau chief for the department of transportation, gave the class an overview of KDOT and their relationships with counties and local municipalities.

The class also toured the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas State Capitol Building.

Leadership Marion County unifies the community of Marion County as it identifies future leaders, examines issues, enhances the network of present and potential leaders, and encourages responsible service at the local and county levels.
