LeRoy Roberts

LeRoy Roberts, 72, died Aug. 27, 2005, at St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

Born Nov. 12, 1932, he was the son of Roy and Sarah (Allen) Roberts.

He attended school in Marion and graduated with the class of 1952.

He was a talented football player in junior and high school and part of the legendary MHS team that went undefeated all four years. He was named in the Top 100 Athletes of Marion County.

He attended Southwestern College at Winfield until he was called to serve in the Army. He served two years in the U.S. Army, the last year stationed at Fort Riley. He served eight years in the Reserves. He contined to play football in college and the Army.

On April 12, 1953, he married Clara Louise Sattler.

He worked for the City of Marion for 24 years, retiring in 1994. He then worked part-time for the city for 11 years.

He was an avid bowler, winning many awards and trophies over the years. In 1983, he and Lou joined the Marionette Campers and were members of the Newton Nomads.

He was a member of Marion Christian Church where he served as deacon and greeter for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Lou of Marion; daughter, Diana and Calvin Myers of Kalvesta; two sons, Richard and Leeah Roberts of Plano, Texas, and David and Sylvia Roberts of Towanda; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at Marion Christian Church with the Rev. Carl Helm officiating.

Burial was in Marion Cemetery with full military honors by a Fort Riley honor guard.

Memorial funds have been established with the church or with the American Cancer Society.
