Let's be thankful

Did you get to see all of your old settler friends? What a great occasion, a wonderful parade, then eating in the park is such fun. Marion has some great pie makers.

Do you remember Mike Oatman, known as Ol' Mike? He was on radio and TV in Wichita and wrote a column for the Wichita Eagle. His three children have gathered some of those columns and had them published in a book. It is in our library and I have been reading it. They are so interesting. One is a cute article on neckties. I'll bet most men would agree with his opinion on that item. I just loved Ol' Mike and wish there were more men like him. It would be a better world.

I have seen the four benches that Nancy Burkholder has presented to the library in memory of Tim and his family. Ed Burkholder, his father, was a writer of western fiction and his mother, Jean, was about as interesting to talk to as anyone you could think of. I urged her to write a book because I knew she had some very interesting experiences while living in New York.

One time Jean took a freighter to China. All she ate was hard-boiled eggs. There were as many bugs on the ship, she figured they couldn't get into an egg.

Instead of counting the things we don't have in Marion, let's count the things we do have — like the museum, the county lake, good schools, a new assisted living facility, and of course, our beautiful library. What else?
