Letter: Inadequate protection
To the Editor:
The city of Marion has raised the annual budget to a record-high of $1.415 million, yet they have seen fit to lower the fire department budget to $16,000. Apparently the safety of our citizens is not as important as a new trash truck.
We, as individuals, pay as much every month for trash service as we do for a whole year's fire protection. I am concerned that the city commission can believe that they are giving us adequate fire protection with a 35-year-old fire truck and a budget that doesn't allow us to replace aging equipment.
If you are as concerned about this as I am, talk to your mayor or city commissioner.
