Letter: Preserve Christmas

To the Editor:

Your guest editorial about Dec. 15 being Bill of Rights Day made me think about where our country is going.

What good is a Bill of Rights if at the same time government doesn't recognize those "inalienable rights" that we are endowed with by our Creator?

What good is a Bill of Rights if our politicians don't recognize the most basic right of all — man's right to be a man, to be the head of his house, to be responsible for himself and his family, and to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Was not the Constitution and the Bill of Rights given to prove us? How do we justify our immorality, our homosexuality, our violence, our broken homes, our consumption? Don't these things bear witness against us? Do we by man-made laws seek to justify our ways rather than acknowledge our failures? Haven't our leaders taught us or encouraged us to believe that freedom is self-indulgence and consumption? So then it gives them the legal right to control us and dictate our lives.

We have taken the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which is good and right, and made it to serve our own self-interest: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

Instead of protecting and promoting our individual right and responsibility to follow after the dictates of our conscience, our leaders have made government responsible for us (with our money) and have substituted man-made laws for conscience.

As far as this holiday season is concerned, haven't we made this season the greatest lie of all? What are we teaching our children? That they couldn't exist or be happy if there wasn't a Santa Claus and they didn't get gifts? Isn't a child's greatest gift to have a father and mother who love each other and care for and nurture their children? We are using the innocent minds of our children to justify our own self-indulgence. We have Black Friday. We say without that, businesses couldn't exist and the economy would go in the tank.

Have we ever thought about preserving the true meaning of Christmas rather than promoting the lie?
