Letter: Thank a veteran

To the Editor:

June 6 this year will mark a very special anniversary. It will be the 60th anniversary of the invasion of Europe on the beaches of Normandy, France. The young men of that greatest generation gave much to ensure that the world would not be under the domination of a tyrannical regime.

There is no greater national treasure than those men who risked all and gave all on those beaches of Normandy. I have met one of several men in Marion County who are among these heroes. His name is Ed Sandwell. I have been mesmerized by what he has humbly described to me of that eventful day. The service of D-Day veterans is especially notable today as young men and women give their lives in a fight for freedom in the war on terrorism.

So much of what we enjoy in today's world is directly attributable to the contribution of veterans. It is too easy to accept the rights we have today without acknowledging the great sacrifices that were borne by them to ensure that we freely exercise those rights. Please, if you know a veteran, take time this week to thank them for their service.
