Letter to the editor: Thanks Marion!

Letter to the Editor:

I would like to thank the entire Marion community for a wonderful day at the Old Settlers' Day celebration. My mother, Suzanne Wheeler Watt, attended her 60th class reunion and my sister, Mary, and I accompanied her on the trip from Chicago, Ill.

Without the kindness and hospitality of our cousin and his wife, Ed and Cherie Wheeler, and the amazing Jean Case, our splendid visit would not have been possible. There are too many folks to thank for the fun.

I spent many summers at my grandparents' farm when I was a little girl and often visited my grandmother, Natalie Wheeler, when I was in college at K-State. I have many fond memories of Marion. At times I was a little teary this weekend, remembering everyone who has been so much a part of my trips to Marion.

The merchants in town, family friends and relatives, the buildings and homes all have special memories for me. I don't know when we can visit again but I wanted to express my appreciation to your community spirit, the picnic in the park, the parade, and class reunions. My mom thoroughly enjoyed herself and I was able to "walk down memory lane."

Thank you, thank you for keeping Marion such a special place in my family's heart!

To the Editor:

I would like to take this opportunity to offer a big "thank you" to the people of Marion for making this year's Old Settlers' Day a memorable one for our family.

My mother, Mary Grubb Herbert, was extremely pleased to be able to ride in the parade this year with two of her classmates from the class of 1931.

She also was very honored to be introduced in the park and asked to say a few words to the crowd. Throughout the day, several people stopped by to talk with her to reminisce about the many happy days she spent in Marion. She is now 92.

My mother was raised in Marion and married Douglas Herbert in 1934. They lived in Marion until 1951, and raised five children.

I was only six years old when we moved away, but I still enjoy coming back for Old Settlers' Day. This year I was able to re-acquaint with some of my sister Billie Jean's friends — a wonderful group from the class of 1956.

When I attend Old Settlers' Day, I am always struck by the atmosphere of camaraderie. Marion is a friendly town with friendly people and an unusually nice tradition that keeps bringing people back home.
