Lincolnville grocery store may close soon

The only northern Marion County town to still have a grocery store may soon lose it.

Unless a buyer can be found for Main Street Grocery in Lincolnville, the town, population 225, may soon be without a local place to buy groceries.

Owners Marion and Carol Lauxman of Hope said they had been considering selling the store the past several months.

Carol Lauxman said the store did not get enough community support to make it pay. She operates a store in Hope and hires people to run the Lincolnville store.

"I don't want to close it, but I don't have any choice," she said. "I'm tired of fighting it. I need a paycheck, too."

She said both stores need owner operators who can do the work by themselves.

Lauxman said her husband no longer is able to work, which makes operating the stores more difficult.

She said if the business has not been sold by the end of September, it will be closed by mid-October.

The Lauxmans purchased the former Tiemeier's Store in 1999 and restored many original features, naming it Main Street Grocery.

The grocery store in Hope also is for sale, but will stay open through Dec. 31 and then be closed if a buyer isn't found.

Fire district is

awarded grant

Marion County Fire District #5 recently was awarded a Homeland Security Grant for thermal imaging systems.

Five local Kansas agencies received grant funds for law enforcement and fire department equipment.

The equipment awards were granted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP).
