When it comes to winning on the golf course, naturally the first Warrior who comes to mind is the defending 3A state champion Travis Hett.

But his freshman sister, Lindsay, showed promising signs of a bright future, too, April 27 at the Hillsboro Junior Varsity golf tournament, shooting a 45 on nine holes to top all competitors, a stroke less than Hesston's runner-up Joel Murray.

Matt Fine was the only other Warrior competing, shooting a 60 for the day.

The Warriors' varsity squad was competing the same day in Salina at the Sacred Heart Invitational at Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Five of the seven schools competing should have called it practice, as both the Warriors and Hillsboro dominated the event.

The day proved to be outstanding for Marion as four of its six players managed top-10 finishes led by Travis' third-place score of 77, three strokes over Hillsboro's Elliot Soyez.

Travis matched Hillsboro's runner-up Justin Kent, but Kent edged him on a handicap.

Luke Gordon was fifth with 80, while Jake Bredemeier and Keith Jones were sixth and seventh, respectively with an 81.

The same quartet helped the Warriors take the four-man title, two strokes better than Hillsboro, who shot a 321.

The Trojans' top-two finishers were enough to be five strokes under Marion's team of Travis and Jones, 153-158.

Next to the rivals in both two- and four-man play, the hosting Knights were the toughest challenge, finishing third.

It wasn't even close with the Knights finishing with 171 in the two-man, and 350 in four.

Marion will get a final tune-up Friday before league play Monday with the Marion-Hillsboro Invitational set to tee off at 8 a.m.

The Warriors faced arguably their toughest meet of the regular-season April 20 at the Wichita Collegiate Invitational.

With competition so tough, even Travis couldn't muster a medal as the Warriors took ninth out of 12 teams with a 333.

Travis did manage to secure a top finish April 16 at Council Grove on a handicap for a 76. Jones was fifth with 78, and Bredemeier's 91 left him 12th to medal.
