Local soldiers wounded in Iraq

Two Marion County servicemen were wounded in action in Iraq this past week.

Specialist Simon Makovec, 22, of Ramona and Specialist Peter Richert, 23, of Hillsboro were among those wounded by shrapnel following an attack by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) near Baghdad.

Makovec was treated and released for minor shrapnel wounds to his legs. Richert lost a leg as a result of the attack and remains hospitalized.

In the attack, Staff Sgt. David Berry of Anthony was killed.

"Simon doesn't want people to be concerned about him," Marissa Makovec said. "He's worried about the other guys who were wounded."

She continued that Simon wants people to pray for the wounded and the family of Sgt. Berry.

A ceremony is being planned by the unit to memorialize Sgt. Berry.

The soldiers are members of Battery B(-), 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, Kansas National Guard. Originally the unit was to return to the States in April but their deployment was extended to at least July.
