Losses pile up for Centre Cougars

Centre High School boys continued their losing streak during the past week with losses to St. John's Military Academy and Lebo.

The team traveled to Salina Feb. 1 and was defeated, 59-46, in an overtime game against St. John's Military Academy.

Dustin Burnett scored Centre's only first quarter points with a three-point shot. The Cougars trailed 14-3 at the end of the quarter.

They picked up their play to score 17 points in the second quarter compared to eight by St. John's. They trailed by two points, 22-20, at halftime.

The Cougars were hot from the three-point line in the third quarter, with three by Seth Jirak and two by Burnett. The team outscored St. John's 20-11 to take an eight-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

It appeared the Cougars then ran into a rock wall. They scored just three points compared to 11 by St. John's, resulting in a 43-43 tie as the clock ran out.

Their cold shooting carried over into the overtime, where they added just three points but St. John's added 16 for a 13-point win.

For the game, the Cougars completed eight of 16 three-point attempts and shot 30 percent from the field overall. They were 4-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Jirak was high-point man with 19 points, followed by Burnett with 14.

Tad Remy and Burnett led rebounding with six each. Kevin Mueller had five. Bryant Gutsch provided four assists.

The junior varsity ran over St. John's, 74-11.

St. John's failed to score in the first and fourth quarters.

Good shooting by Lance Diepenbrock, Thieen Antoszyk, and Alfonse Klenda led to a 23-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougars added 22 in the second quarter and 19 in the third to lead 64-ll. They added 10 in the fourth for the 63-point win.

Diepenbrock led scoring with 22 points. Klenda scored 18 points and Bryant Brunner 12.

Lebo

The varsity was defeated Friday by Lebo, 69-56.

They trailed early and never caught up. After being down by 11 points, 20-9, at the end of the first quarter, they trailed by nine points at halftime.

They closed the gap to seven points at the end of the third quarter but were outscored 22-16 in the final quarter to lose by 13 points.

Burnett had an excellent second half, scoring 15 points on five field goals and five free throws. He led the team in scoring with 18 points altogether.

No other player scored in double digits. Garrard made nine points, Jirak seven, Tad Remy six, Gutsch and Andrew Hajek five each, Trent Hajek four, and Mueller two.

Other statistics were not available.

The junior varsity was defeated, 69-38. Diepenbrock scored 13 points including three three-point shots, and Klenda added 11.
